The new CNMC regulations mark a turning point in corporate communication in Spain. To curb fraud and identity theft, the use of customised sender IDs (ALIAS) is no longer optional. From now on, registering SMS ALIAS in Spain is a regulated process that requires official registration.

At Viafirma, we don’t want this change to catch you off guard, let alone halt your business operations. That’s why we’ve put together a short guide on Circular 1/2026; find out everything you need to know before 15 September .

What is an ALIAS and why is it now mandatory to register it?

When your company sends an SMS and the recipient sees a name — ‘MyBank’, “YourInsurance”, ‘Viafirma’ — instead of a phone number, that name is the ALIAS or Sender ID. Until now, any company could use any name. This has allowed fraudsters to impersonate banks, government bodies and companies with alarming ease.

CNMC Circular 1/2026, drawn up in accordance with Order TDF/149/2025, puts an end to this situation: from 15 September 2026, only aliases previously registered in the CNMC’s official register and linked to their legitimate owner may be used. All others will be blocked.

The regulation applies to all companies sending SMS messages to Spanish numbers, whether or not they are based in Spain.

How does SMS messaging work on Viafirma?

Viafirma is not a mobile network operator. We are the technology platform that manages signature requests and notifications; for sending SMS messages, we integrate with specialist providers authorised by the CNMC (such as Link Mobility, Commify Iberia, etc.). That is why registering the ALIAS is a process that falls to your company as the account holder, not to Viafirma.

Today we’re setting out the requirements and how to complete the registration.

Does this process seem complicated? We’ll explain it in a downloadable infographic on 5 June in our ‘Tu Firma al Mes’ newsletter. Subscribe here and don’t miss it.

Prerequisites: what you need before you start

Digital certificate — On behalf of your company, valid on the CNMC’s @firma platform.

Valid ALIAS — Between 3 and 11 characters, not just numbers, and no generic words such as ‘Notice’ or ‘INFO’.

Legitimate link — Registered trademark, company name or web domain that justifies the use of the name.

Documentation — Deed, Companies Register certificate or trademark registration (only if requested by the CNMC).

The registration process for working with us, step by step

Access the CNMC portal Go to the CNMC’s online portal (sede.cnmc.gob.es) and log in using your digital certificate. Spanish companies must use a valid Spanish certificate; companies from eIDAS countries may use their local certificate.

Complete the applicant’s details Select “On my own behalf” if you are a representative of the registered company. Choose “Alias Registration” as the type of application. The email address you provide will receive all communications from the CNMC: use one that is active and regularly checked.

Add the registered company’s representative The system requires you to identify a natural person with powers of representation. Enable the option to receive notifications so as not to miss any communications from the registry.

Register your ALIAS and justify the link Enter the alias name, select SMS/MMS as the message type and set the activation date. Then specify the legitimate link: web domain, company name or registered trademark. This point is critical — if the justification is not consistent, the application may be rejected.

Select providers Add the companies you use to send SMS messages as providers. If you work with us, you can search for the providers that Viafirma works with (we will let you know which ones). If you do not include them, messages sent via our platform may be blocked even if the alias is registered.

Add Viafirma as a Third Party As Viafirma acts as a software intermediary between you and the provider, you must register us as a third party.

Review, sign and submit Review the full summary, accept the declaration of compliance and click on ‘Submit’. Download the submission receipt and save it. The CNMC will issue a decision within a maximum of 1 month (up to 3 months during the transitional period until 2026).

Notify us of the favourable decision Once registered, send us the decision to ayuda@viafirma.com so that we can verify synchronisation with our SMS provider and activate your custom alias on our platform.

If you haven’t yet started the process of registering your SMS Alias and want to work with the best, we offer hourly support packages for this type of issue, as well as monthly and annual signature packages that will allow your company to sign documents and ensure notifications are delivered.

Still not clear?
