If your mind was previously focused on hobbies and Excel spreadsheets, overnight it shifts to nappies, sleepless nights and savouring every moment… but with the arrival of a new family member comes the obligation to complete and fill in a mountain of bureaucratic paperwork that nobody fancies dealing with.

Fortunately, the days of having to queue for ages to submit applications are long gone. In 2026, the process is entirely online. You can sort out how to apply for paternity leave using a digital certificate without leaving home, whilst on your way to the chemist’s, or even if you’re still in hospital.

In today’s article, we explain how to do it hassle-free in just a few steps.

How long is paternity leave in 2026?

From 1 January 2026, paternity and childcare leave will be 19 weeks’ paid leave for each parent, which is an increase of 3 weeks compared to the previous leave entitlement.

Allocation of leave: How can you organise yourself?

In accordance with Royal Decree-Law 9/2025, paternity leave in 2026 is allocated as follows:

The first 6 weeks: These are compulsory, must be taken as a continuous period and on a full-time basis following the birth, adoption or fostering of a child.

The following 11 weeks: These are flexible and can be taken during the first year either continuously or in blocks of at least one week, on a full-time or part-time basis.

The additional 2 weeks’ paid leave: These are at the parent’s discretion, so they can be spread out to facilitate a gradual return to work.

Requirements for receiving 100% of the benefit

During the period of paternity leave, the parent will continue to receive 100% of their Social Security contribution base. However, to be eligible to claim paternity leave with entitlement to the benefit, you must have completed a minimum contribution period, which varies according to age:

If the parent is under 21, no minimum contribution period is required

If they are aged between 21 and 26, they must have made contributions for 90 days in the previous 7 years, or 180 days over the course of their entire working life

If they are over 26, they must have contributed for 180 days in the previous 7 years, or 360 days throughout their working life

Requirements and documents needed for the online application

To successfully apply for paternity or maternity leave and ensure the Social Security computer system does not reject the application, you must have the following documents to hand:

Identity document: DNI or NIE

The baby’s registration with the Civil Registry, or an up-to-date Family Register

Company certificate (check that the company has submitted it electronically)

Court order in the case of adoption

Bank details: Bank account number (IBAN) where you wish to receive your benefit

Beyond your essential personal details, the key to applying for paternity leave online lies in the Social Security’s online portal, where you will need to have a valid digital certificate to identify yourself. Without a valid digital signature, you will not be able to complete or sign the online form, nor will you be able to submit your application officially.

How to apply for paternity leave using a Digital Certificate

Applying for paternity leave using a Digital Certificate in 2026 is very straightforward. The entire process is carried out via the Social Security’s online portal, and you simply need to follow four steps:

Access the “Tu Seguridad Social” portal within the Social Security website. You will need to identify yourself using a digital certificate, select yours and enter your password.

Fill in the ‘Birth and childcare’ form: To calculate your benefit, enter your personal and contact details, the child’s details and the breakdown of your leave periods into the form.

Attach the documents and sign electronically: Upload the documents requested in the previous step. Then, sign the application electronically.

Confirmation and processing times: If the application has been successfully completed, you will see a confirmation message and you will be able to download a PDF receipt with a secure verification code (CSV).

The usual problem: Digital certificate chaos at the worst possible moment

Have you ever seen the message ‘Invalid certificate’? It’s as common as it is inconvenient. Trying to apply for paternity leave online often comes with a host of problems, ranging from technical issues to connectivity and compatibility issues:

Technical errors and lost passwords

Among technical issues, the most frequent are:

Your digital certificate expired weeks ago and you didn’t know

Your browser is no longer compatible with the Social Security’s signature system

You need to install the latest version of Autofirma, or you’re experiencing issues with Java

In situations like these, the quick fix that springs to mind for many people is to spend the whole afternoon researching and scouring online forums for a solution. However, that doesn’t sound like a very appealing (or even feasible) option when you’ve got a crying newborn next to you, does it?

Compatibility and mobility issues

On the other hand, using a digital certificate is not without its problems. If you use a traditional digital certificate as such (in .pfx or .p12 format), it is usually installed and stored on a specific device.

If you want to sort this out whilst your baby is still in hospital, whilst you’re in the car on the way to the chemist’s, or simply whilst you’re rocking your baby in the living room, you won’t be able to do it at that moment and will have to wait until you can sit down at a computer. If you want to do it from your mobile or tablet, you’ll find that exporting your digital certificate to either of these devices is no easy task; on the contrary, in many cases it can be a real hassle. The result? You end up putting off the process until you can do it from your computer.

Key benefits for parents at every stage of their baby’s life

Secure family management: With the arrival of a baby and in couple relationships, the paperwork doubles: benefits, maternity leave, paternity leave, etc. With Viafirma, you can manage both parents’ digital certificates in one place, securely, and avoid losing files.

Sign from any device: Do you want to submit an application to the National Insurance Office, but your little one has fallen asleep in your arms and you don’t want to wake them? With Viafirma, you can use your digital certificate from any device – mobile phone or tablet, whether iOS or Android – without having to deal with issues relating to Autofirma, Java or browser settings.

Control and security: Our certificate manager notifies you when your digital certificate is about to expire (30, 7 and 1 days in advance) so you can renew it and avoid being caught off guard by its expiry. Or worse: just as you’re about to submit an important application.

However, paternity leave (or birth leave) is just the first chapter in a long story that will involve a lot of paperwork, not just over the coming months, but for years to come. With Viafirma’s certificate manager, you’ll be able to complete tasks such as:

Update your tax details or submit your tax return following the arrival of your new baby

Arrange your child’s future schooling or apply for a place at a state nursery

Signing school authorisations for future trips, academic fees or enrolments

Leave the paperwork to Viafirma

Although public services have gone digital to make everyday life easier, there is still a long way to go: forgotten passwords, compatibility issues or incorrectly configured digital certificates can turn a simple procedure into a real headache.

In response to this, Viafirma’s certificate manager ensures your digital identity is always ready, secure and accessible from your own mobile phone, wherever you live and wherever you are.
