MOMENTuM, a multi-biometric project for mobile device security.

Viafirma is pleased to announce the participation in MOMENTuM, a project for mobile device security alongside other leading companies in the sector.

For those who are not quite familiar with the term, the multibiometric is the identification of the person through different biometric data, for example using different physical parameters that are unique for each person.

Biometrics as an identification method is settling down more every day, in fact, a very clear example are the sensors that the latest mobile devices have to unlock the phone with the fingerprint of the owner.

Similarly, voice recognition and even iris (eyes) are forms of identification through biometric data which are slowly gaining ground on traditional passwords. For example, in many international airports such as Stansted or Heathrow, facial recognition is used to identify travellers entering the country as long as they have a Digital Passport.

Biometrics, especially for sectors where a high degree of security are required such as banks and financial or health institutions, offer many advantages, not only by increasing usability or the need to remember passwords, or to have the digital certificate installed on your device or take the certificate to any cryptographic card to operate.

As Julian Fierrez explains in his article “The banks have much to gain from biometrics”, the correct implementation of biometric systems for authentication, could lead to greater efficiency by saving time and paper costs. It also allows more powerful systems and facilitates fraud which can be operated remotely.

It is in this scenario that MOMENTuM created a biometric draft for security on mobile devices.

MOMENTuM: Multibiometric for security on mobile devices

biometric authentication for mobile devices

The overall goal of MOMENTuM is to provide a mechanism for safe and usable services for the electronic signatures and other online services in mobility scenarios.

This goal was created with the help and collaboration of Viavansi with two other leading companies in the sector, SEIDOR CONSULTING and AYCOS Internet, which contributes to Centro Tecnolóxico de Telecomunicacións de Galicia, GRADIANT.

The project identifies two sides:

1. On the one hand, developing a multifactor biometric security suite for security and access control on mobile devices. To realize this, it will be based on facial recognition arrangements (Seydor), speaker recognition (AYCO) and recognition of handwritten signature (VIAVANSI). GRADIANT collaborate horizontally on the research and develops biometric suite in three ways, namely algorithmic improvement of these methods, optimization for mobile devices and integration into a multimodal fusion system is pursued. This in combination by following the main standards in biometrics and authentication solutions (FIDO Alliance).

2. Realize a mobile application that integrates the access method, provided by the first objective of the project in the case of using the digital signature (in the cloud) in mobility scenarios. This goal will serve as a demonstration of integration and the use of all the technologies involved in the project and is fully developed by VIAVANSI.

The duration of this project is 3 years and has a total budget of € 2,075,000 with funding from CDTI, through the Feder Interconnect program, call 2015.
